Because it lives outside, it takes the brunt of sun, rain, and near the coast, salt riding in on the air, so keeping the fins clear and the space around it open matters more than most homeowners expect. Evaporator Coil
The evaporator coil is the coil inside the air handler where the actual cooling happens: cold refrigerant flows through a maze of copper tubing and aluminum fins while the blower pushes house air across it. Air crossing that coil loses both heat and moisture, which is why a supply vent blows noticeably cooler and drier air than the room around it. This coil sits inside a closed cabinet, away from weather, so its problems tend to come from a quieter source, dust buildup over time or, less often, a tiny pinhole leak etched into the copper. Air Handler
The air handler is the indoor cabinet that houses the blower motor and the evaporator coil together, usually tucked into a closet, garage, or attic depending on the house. It's the half of the system doing the actual work of cooling and moving air, while the condenser outside just handles getting rid of the heat that comes from that work. In Florida, where that cabinet sits changes how hard it works day to day, since a closet inside conditioned space is an easier life than a hot attic. A weakening blower tends to follow a pattern worth knowing: fainter airflow at the vents first, then longer run times, and sometimes a grinding or squealing sound from the air handler itself. Compressor

Line Set

One line runs cold and is wrapped in foam insulation, the other runs at a more moderate temperature and usually stays bare; together they're what makes a split system split in the first place. The connections between sections get sealed by brazing, a heat-based joining method built to hold refrigerant under pressure for years without leaking. A line set that's kinked, poorly insulated, or run for any distance through an unconditioned attic can lose efficiency before the refrigerant ever reaches either end. On a system replacement, whether the old line set gets reused or swapped for new copper is one of the quieter decisions that affects how the whole system performs afterward.
