Two things push it below 32 degrees: not enough air reaching it, or not enough refrigerant inside it.

From the outside, both look identical. You'll see ice on the copper line running to the outdoor unit, ice creeping across the coil itself, sometimes a solid frozen block covering both by the time anyone notices. That's what makes this symptom tricky: the fix for a blocked filter and the fix for a refrigerant leak have nothing in common, but the ice they cause looks exactly the same to anyone standing in front of it.

Knowing which side of that fork you're on matters, because guessing wrong wastes time while the underlying problem keeps going. A homeowner can rule airflow in or out with a quick look. Only a licensed technician with gauges can confirm refrigerant.

Why Airflow Problems Usually Start With the Filter

A clogged air filter is the single most common reason a coil freezes. When the filter is packed with dust, less air can pass through it, which means less air reaches the coil. Once ice starts forming, it acts like insulation on the coil, blocking even more airflow than the original problem did. It's a feedback loop, and it gets worse the longer you let it continue.
