Why does my AC keep tripping the breaker?

The Usual Reasons an AC Circuit Overloads

A handful of AC problems tend to show up first as a tripped breaker. A run or start capacitor gives the compressor motor a jolt of stored energy every time it starts. As a capacitor weakens with age, the motor has to strain harder to start, pulling extra current each cycle. A dirty condenser coil or blocked airflow around the outdoor unit forces the compressor to work well beyond its normal load, which can push current draw past what the circuit allows. A contactor or wiring connection that has loosened or corroded over years of Florida heat overheats at that spot and starves the motor of voltage, and a motor running on low voltage pulls extra current to do the same work. An evaporator coil that has iced over from restricted airflow or another problem can send liquid refrigerant back to the compressor, and a compressor built to pump vapor strains hard against liquid, sometimes hard enough to trip the circuit.

If ice on the indoor coil or the copper line is part of what you are seeing along with the tripped breaker, do one thing first. Switch your thermostat to off (not just up) to protect the system if it's frozen or struggling. Running a frozen system harder does not clear the ice. It just adds more strain on top of whatever caused the breaker to trip in the first place.

Why Resetting It Again and Again Makes Things Worse

One reset is a reasonable check. Doing it five times in an afternoon is not. Every time you restore power to a circuit with an active electrical fault, you send full current back through a component that already struggled the last time. A compressor motor that is overheating internally can suffer permanent damage to its windings after enough of these cycles, turning what might have been a simple repair into a full compressor or system replacement.

Wiring insulation that gets pushed past its rating repeatedly also degrades faster than it should. None of that shows up on the outside. The breaker tripping is the only visible sign you get, and it is telling you to stop, not to try again.

The One Check You Can Make, and Where to Stop

Here is the line for a homeowner. Turn the thermostat off, reset the breaker once, wait a few minutes, then set the thermostat back to cool and see if it holds. If it holds, you are done for now, and the trip is worth mentioning at your next maintenance visit. If it trips again immediately, or within a few minutes of resetting, stop there. That is your answer: an electrical fault inside the system that a breaker reset cannot fix, no matter how many times you try it.

Capacitors hold an electrical charge even after the power is off, and tracing which part is actually failing takes test equipment most homes do not have lying around. Breakers also wear out mechanically with age and can become more sensitive to tripping than they used to be, independent of anything happening inside the AC.

Neither possibility means you should keep flipping the breaker to test it. It just means that when a technician comes out, the panel and the breaker itself are part of what gets checked, not only the AC equipment. Sometimes the fix really is a worn breaker rather than anything in the system, and a proper diagnosis is the only way to know which one you are dealing with.
