Airflow Terms Every Homeowner Hears
A technician diagnosing a hot room or a weak vent tends to reach for a specific set of words: CFM, static pressure, delta-T, return, supply, plenum. Each one names something a technician can actually measure. The Words Behind 'Airflow Problem'
A hot room or a weak-feeling vent almost always traces back to airflow, the physical side of cooling: getting enough air moving through the house rather than just pulling heat out of it. That side of the system has its own small vocabulary, and it comes up whenever a technician explains why one room runs hot while the rest of the house is fine.
Each one describes a specific, measurable piece of how air actually travels from a return grille, through the equipment, and back out to a room, and not one of them requires an engineering background to understand. Knowing them turns a repair explanation into something you can follow instead of something you just have to trust.
CFM
CFM stands for cubic feet per minute, and it measures how much air the system's blower is actually moving, not how much heat the equipment can remove. That second job, heat removal, is what tonnage measures. A system can carry the right tonnage on the rating plate and still leave a room short if the real CFM reaching that room falls behind what the equipment was designed to move.
Homeowners care about CFM because it's the number that actually decides how strong a vent feels, not the size of the outdoor unit. A dirty filter, an undersized duct, or a choked return can all cut into CFM without changing the tonnage number at all, which is exactly why two houses with matching equipment can perform very differently.
Static Pressure
Static pressure is the total resistance the blower has to push against to move air through the whole system: the ducts, the filter, the coil, and every return and supply opening along the way. Technicians measure it in inches of water column, a small number that tells a much bigger story about how hard the equipment is working just to move air, before it even gets to cooling anything.
A system fighting high static pressure runs louder, works harder, and often delivers less real airflow than its CFM rating assumes, even with a perfectly good blower inside. It's one of the first things worth measuring rather than guessing at when a system runs constantly or a room never quite catches up.
Delta-T
Delta-T is the temperature split between the air going into the system through the return and the air coming back out through the supply. A technician checks it by measuring both sides and finding the difference. That split tells you whether the system is actually removing heat the way it should, since a properly working system pulls a fairly consistent number of degrees off the air on every pass across the coil.
A delta-T that's too small usually points to a low refrigerant charge, a dirty outdoor coil, or more airflow than the coil can use. One that's unusually large points the other way, toward restricted airflow: a clogged filter, a dirty evaporator coil, or ducts that can't move enough air. Either way, it's a quick, honest read on system health that goes well beyond just checking the thermostat number.
Return Air
Return air is the air being pulled out of the house and back toward the equipment, through one or more return grilles, usually a hallway or central location rather than one per room. It's the intake side of the loop: warmer, more humid house air heading back in to get filtered and cooled again.
Most homes run on surprisingly few returns, sometimes just one, which means the return side carries an outsized share of the system's total airflow. A closed bedroom door can cut a room off from its return path even while the supply vent keeps blowing air in, which is a common, overlooked cause of a room that never quite cools.
Supply Air
Supply air is the cooled air being pushed out through the vents into each room, the half of the loop most people actually notice, since there's usually a supply vent in nearly every room while returns are few and far between.
Because there are so many supply vents sharing one blower's output, each one only gets a slice of the total airflow. A duct run that's too long, too narrow, or bent one too many times can shrink that slice before it ever reaches the room, leaving a supply vent that blows noticeably weaker than the one next door.
Plenum
The plenum is the box connected directly to the air handler where the branch ducts all meet. A supply plenum is where cooled air leaves the equipment and splits off into the ducts running to every room. A return plenum is where the return ducts converge before air heads back into the equipment to be filtered and cooled again.
Homeowners rarely see the plenum itself, tucked in a closet or attic, but it's worth knowing it exists because it's the hub everything else connects to. A poorly sized or leaky plenum can undercut good ductwork everywhere downstream of it, since every branch duct is only as good as the shared connection point feeding it.
Putting the Words to Use
These six terms describe one continuous loop: return air comes in, passes through the plenum, gets moved against whatever static pressure the ductwork creates, and leaves as supply air, with CFM and delta-T telling you how well the whole loop is actually performing.
