Refrigerant Terms, Without the Jargon

The short version

When a technician talks about refrigerant, superheat, subcooling, a TXV, a metering device, or a sealed system, they're describing one closed loop and the numbers that show whether it's working right. These are gauge readings and part names a trained tech uses to find what's wrong inside a system you can't see into, not homeowner tools. Knowing what the words mean won't let you diagnose your own AC, but it will help the explanation make sense the first time a technician walks you through what the gauges found.

The Vocabulary Behind a Diagnosis

Most of what matters inside an outdoor condenser is invisible from where a homeowner stands. Refrigerant moves through sealed copper lines under pressure, changing from liquid to gas and back again, and a handful of numbers and part names describe exactly how well that cycle is running.

You'll hear this vocabulary on a call or a work order, not because you're expected to use it yourself, but because it helps to follow along when a technician explains what they found. Every term below belongs to the sealed side of the system, the part a homeowner never opens.

Refrigerant

Refrigerant is the fluid that actually carries heat out of your house. Indoors, it evaporates from liquid to gas inside the evaporator coil, soaking up heat from the air blowing across it. Outdoors, it gives that heat back up as it condenses from gas back to liquid, then heads inside to do it again.

Refrigerant isn't a fuel, and normal operation doesn't use it up. A system that's low needs refrigerant added because it's leaking somewhere in that sealed loop, not because it burned through its supply. Topping it off without finding the leak treats the symptom and leaves the hole exactly where it was, so the same symptoms come back.

If your AC is low on charge or has developed a leak, that's AC repair work, not routine maintenance.

Superheat

Superheat is a number a technician calculates, not something printed on a gauge. It's the difference between the actual temperature of the refrigerant gas leaving the evaporator coil and the temperature that refrigerant would boil at, at the pressure being measured right then. A proper superheat reading confirms the refrigerant fully turned to gas before it left the coil, exactly what's supposed to happen.

Reading superheat takes a set of gauges, a temperature probe clamped to the line, and the math to compare the two. It's technician work start to finish. What it buys a homeowner is precision: a superheat number that's too high or too low points a tech toward the real cause, whether that's a low charge or a restricted airflow problem, instead of a guess.

Subcooling

Subcooling is superheat's mirror image, taken on the liquid line instead of the gas line. It's the number of degrees the liquid refrigerant has cooled below its condensing temperature by the time it leaves the outdoor unit, confirming it has fully turned to liquid before it reaches the metering device.

On systems with a TXV, subcooling is often the main number a technician uses to confirm the charge is correct, since a TXV changes how superheat behaves at the coil. Like superheat, it's read with gauges and a temperature probe, a diagnostic step rather than a homeowner check.

TXV

TXV stands for thermostatic expansion valve, one type of metering device. It sits right before the evaporator coil and meters exactly how much refrigerant enters, adjusting its opening as cooling demand changes rather than holding one fixed setting the way a simpler device does.

A failing TXV tends to show up as weak cooling, ice forming on the coil, or a hissing sound as it struggles to regulate flow. Diagnosing and replacing one means recovering refrigerant, opening the sealed system, and pulling a vacuum afterward, all technician work.

Metering Device

Metering device is the broader category a TXV belongs to. It's whichever component creates the pressure drop right before the evaporator coil, the step that lets refrigerant expand and cool enough to start absorbing heat from the air. Some systems use a fixed orifice instead of a TXV, a simpler part with one set opening rather than one that adjusts on its own.

Either type sits inside the sealed system, between the liquid line and the evaporator coil, and either type is something a technician tests and replaces, never something a homeowner reaches.

Sealed System

The sealed system is the closed loop itself: the compressor, both coils, the metering device, and the copper lines connecting them, all holding the same refrigerant charge for the working life of the equipment. It's built and pressure-tested to stay closed, with no routine reason for outside air or moisture to get in.

Because it's sealed, working on it, whether that's checking a charge, chasing a leak, or replacing a metering device, means recovering refrigerant and reopening a system designed to stay shut. That's licensed, technician-only territory, exactly why every term on this page describes something a repair tech measures and a homeowner doesn't.

What a Homeowner's Job Actually Is

None of this vocabulary is something to act on at home. Your job with a sealed system is noticing when something looks or sounds off, ice on the copper line, weak airflow, a hissing sound, cooling that's quietly gotten worse, and getting a technician out before a small problem turns into a bigger one.

Once a tech is on site, these are the words they'll use to explain what the gauges showed. When a technician says the charge checked out but the superheat was high, that sentence should now land as information instead of noise. That is the whole point of the vocabulary.
