Condensate Terms: Pans, Lines, Switches and Pumps
An air conditioner running in a humid climate is always moving water somewhere, and that path has its own vocabulary: condensate, drain pan, primary line, secondary line, float switch, condensate pump. Six words that map where that water is supposed to go, off a cold coil, into a pan, down a line, and out through a point built for exactly this job. Water Has a Route, and a Vocabulary
Every air conditioner running in Southwest Florida is pulling real water out of the air, and that water needs a name for each stop along its path. Condensate, drain pan, primary line, secondary line, float switch, condensate pump: six words that map the entire route water travels from the coil to wherever it is meant to end up outside. None of it means the system is broken. Water is the job working, not a warning sign, as long as it is following the path these terms describe.

Condensate
Condensate is the water an air conditioner pulls straight out of humid air, formed the same way a cold glass of tea sweats on a porch table. Warm, moist house air passes over the system's cold evaporator coil, and the moisture in it condenses right out onto the coil's fins before dripping off. On a hot, humid afternoon here, that adds up to real volume, several gallons over the course of a day. It is not a leak or a malfunction by itself, it is the humidity half of what an air conditioner is actually built to do.
Drain pan
The drain pan is the shallow catch basin mounted directly beneath the evaporator coil, built to collect condensate the moment it drips off. Many Southwest Florida installations actually use two: a primary pan right under the coil for everyday condensate, and a larger secondary pan under the whole cabinet, there to catch anything the first pan lets past before it finds a ceiling. A closer look at that pan covers what its cracks and overflows usually mean. It has no motor or electronics, just a shaped catch basin, but it is the first checkpoint in the entire water story.
Primary drain line
The primary drain line is the everyday route: a thin PVC pipe that carries condensate from the drain pan out to a termination point outside the house, usually low, near the foundation or the outdoor unit. Gravity does the work, no pump or power involved, as long as the line holds a steady downhill slope the whole way. Florida's heat and humidity give algae and biofilm plenty of reason to build up gradually inside the pipe, which is normal wear over time, not something gone wrong. Where that water actually goes covers the rest of the path; the short version here is that a dripping pipe low on the house is this line doing exactly what it is built to do.
Secondary or emergency line
A secondary or emergency line is a backup pipe, common on attic air handlers, meant to stay completely dry under normal conditions. It usually terminates somewhere visible from outside, often higher on the wall or through a soffit near a window, specifically so a homeowner or a passerby notices if it ever starts running. Water from that line means the primary line backed up somewhere behind it, and the system found a second way out before real damage happened indoors. A dripping pipe up high is worth a call; the same drip from the low, primary line near the ground is not.
Float switch
A float switch is a small safety device sitting in the drain pan or the line itself. Its whole function is to watch the water level: once it climbs past where it should be, the switch trips and shuts the system down before that water can reach a ceiling, a floor, or a closet. A tripped switch is the safety device catching a problem, not a problem of its own, and the switch itself is almost never actually at fault. If it trips, one careful flush is a reasonable first step, plain water or a little vinegar at the cleanout tee, or a wet/dry vac at the outside end. If the switch will not reset, or it trips again, that is the point to call rather than repeat the attempt.
Condensate pump
A condensate pump is a small electric pump used wherever gravity alone cannot carry water to a safe drain: a closet air handler with nowhere downhill to go, a slab home, a condo stacked several floors up. Water fills a small reservoir until it hits a set level, at which point an internal switch starts the motor and sends that water up and out to a drain it could never have reached on its own. A pump starting to fail usually shows up first as constant running, a new grinding or gurgling sound, or a system that shuts itself off because water backed up in the reservoir. It is a mechanical part with a motor and moving pieces, so like anything else in this chain, it has a service life and eventually needs attention.
Knowing Which Drip Is Normal
Every one of these terms describes a single, continuous route: coil to pan to line, sometimes through a pump, always backed up by a float switch. An AC maintenance visit is largely what keeps that whole path clear before any of it turns into a call, on the air handler and the outdoor unit, twice a year.
Recognizing which drip is normal and which one is worth a call is most of the value in knowing these words in the first place. The rest is just knowing who to call when a switch will not reset or a pump keeps cycling instead of clearing.
