What is a condensate pump and how do I know it failed?
A condensate pump is a small electric pump that moves the water your AC pulls out of the air uphill or sideways to a drain, for installs where gravity alone cannot carry it there. It sits in a small reservoir, switches on once water reaches a set level, and pushes it out through a discharge tube. A failing pump usually shows up as a pump that runs constantly, makes a new grinding or gurgling noise, or an AC that shuts itself off because water is backing up in that reservoir instead of leaving it.
When Gravity Can't Get the Water Where It Needs to Go
Most AC systems drain the simple way: water leaves the coil, drops into a pan, and runs downhill through a pipe to a spot outside. That only works when the air handler sits high enough, and close enough to an exit point, for gravity to do the whole job on its own. An air handler installed mid-house, in a spot where the nearest exit is farther away than a gentle slope can reach, or in a location where the water would have to travel upward at any point to get out, cannot rely on gravity alone.
A condensate pump exists to solve exactly that layout problem, picking up where a plain downhill pipe runs out of options. It shows up most often in interior closets, converted rooms, and any install where the original plumbing simply was not routed with a straight downhill run in mind. None of that makes the install wrong. It just means the water needs a push instead of a slope.
How the Pump Actually Does the Work
The pump itself is a small unit, often not much bigger than a shoebox, sitting near the air handler with a short section of tubing running in from the drain pan or line above it. Water collects inside a small internal reservoir until it reaches a set level, at which point a switch inside triggers the motor, and the pump pushes that water out through a discharge line, often a thin tube that can run several feet, even uphill, to wherever the water is allowed to drain.
Once the reservoir empties back down, the pump shuts off and waits for the next batch to collect. On a humid Southwest Florida day, with the AC running long stretches, that cycle can repeat many times without anyone in the house ever noticing it's happening. A pump working correctly is one of the quieter parts of the whole system, doing its job in short bursts that most homeowners never think about.
Its Own Float Switch, Separate From the One in the Drain Pan
Most condensate pumps include a second, smaller safety switch of their own, tucked inside that little reservoir alongside the pump itself. Its job is narrow and specific: if the pump fails to keep up, whether the motor has died, the discharge line is blocked, or the switch that should trigger the motor has stuck, water keeps rising in that small reservoir instead of getting pushed out.
Once the water reaches a certain height, this switch cuts power to the AC, the same protective idea as the float switch that sits in a system's main drain pan, just a separate part, watching a separate, much smaller container. A home can have both switches installed at once, one guarding the primary pan and one guarding the pump's own reservoir, each catching a different kind of drainage failure before it reaches your ceiling or floor.
The Signs a Condensate Pump Is on Its Way Out
A pump nearing failure tends to announce itself a few ways. It might run far longer than a quick burst, humming continuously instead of cycling on and off the way it's supposed to, a sign the motor is struggling or the internal float isn't resetting properly. It might start making a new sound entirely, a grinding, rattling, or gurgling noise that wasn't there before, often meaning something inside the small reservoir is worn or partly clogged.
Visible water pooling near the air handler, even though the drain line itself seems fine, points at the pump rather than the line. And on many systems, the clearest sign is the one nobody wants: the AC simply shuts off, because the pump's own safety switch has already done its job and cut power before the reservoir could overflow.
