An attached garage is typically required to stay separated from a home's living space, with fire-rated walls and doors keeping the two apart. That separation exists for real safety reasons: a garage stores fuel, chemicals, and a running vehicle, and building codes generally don't want air moving freely between that space and the rooms people sleep and breathe in every day. Running ductwork straight from the house system into the garage works against that separation instead of respecting it, which is why it's not simply a wiring or airflow question.
It's not only about air flowing back into the house, either. Any opening into the garage, supply vent or return, is a breach of a barrier that's supposed to stay sealed, and a duct run through that space leaks in both directions over its life, especially once the system cycles off and stops pushing air through it. A closed system, one that never shares ductwork with the garage at all, keeps that barrier intact the way it was designed to work.
The Moisture Reason: A Hot, Humid Space on a Cold Supply Line
Even setting code aside, a garage is a rough environment for a shared duct run. It heats up fast during the day with little insulation slowing it down, and Southwest Florida keeps the air inside it humid on top of that. Push cold supply air from the house system into a register sitting in that kind of space and condensation can start forming right at the vent and the duct feeding it, the same way a cold soda can left on a workbench beads up the moment it hits that closed-up garage air. That's moisture sitting somewhere it wasn't designed to, on top of asking one shared system to condition two very different environments at once.
That moisture problem doesn't stay confined to the vent itself. A duct run feeding a hot, humid garage means the ductwork inside that garage is now carrying cold air through a space it was never insulated for, which is exactly the setup that grows condensation along the outside of the duct too, not just the register. A house-side duct system generally sits inside conditioned space or a properly sealed attic, and a garage branch breaks that assumption for however far the run extends.
What Actually Works for a Garage That Needs Cooling
If the garage genuinely needs to be comfortable, whether it's a workshop, a home gym, or just a space you don't want to dread walking into, a ductless mini-split is the way to get there without opening the barrier a duct run would break. Because it never taps into the house's ductwork at all, nothing about the garage's air, its exhaust, or whatever drifts through with the door open ever has a path back into the living space.
That separation solves the moisture problem too. Equipment installed and sized for the garage on its own terms isn't feeding cold air through ductwork that was never insulated for a hot, humid space, so the condensation risk described above goes away along with the code problem.
