A System's Cooling Capacity Is Not a Fixed Number
Every air conditioner has a cooling capacity rating, the amount of heat it can move out of a house per hour, but that number assumes a specific outdoor temperature. As the actual outdoor air climbs past that point, the system has to work against a smaller temperature difference to push heat out of the refrigerant and into the outside air, and its real, working capacity edges down. At the same moment capacity is dropping, the load on the house, how much heat the system has to remove, is climbing in the opposite direction. What a Normal Day-to-Night Gap Looks Like
