Relative Humidity
Relative humidity is how much moisture the air is actually holding compared with the most it could hold at that exact temperature, expressed as a percentage. It's called relative because the same amount of moisture reads as a higher percentage in cooler air and a lower percentage in warmer air, since warm air can hold more water before it's saturated.
Homeowners care about relative humidity because it's the number most directly tied to how sticky a room feels. A room can sit at a comfortable temperature and still feel damp if relative humidity is high, which is exactly the situation a lot of Southwest Florida homes run into during the milder, rainier stretches of the year.
Latent Heat
Latent heat is the energy tied up in changing moisture from one state to another, water vapor condensing into liquid on a cold coil, rather than in raising or lowering air temperature. Removing latent heat is how an air conditioner pulls moisture out of the air in the first place, the way beads of water collect on the outside of a pitcher of iced tea.
This matters to a homeowner because latent heat removal, in plain terms, drying the air, is a separate job from cooling it, and a system can do one well without doing the other well. A house that's cool but still feels clammy usually points to a system that isn't handling the latent side of the load the way it should.
Sensible Heat
Sensible heat is the heat tied to actual air temperature, the part the thermostat reads directly and the part most people mean when they say a house feels hot or cold. Removing sensible heat is what most people picture an air conditioner doing: pulling warmth out of the air so the number on the wall drops.
Sensible and latent heat together make up the total load a system has to handle. A house can satisfy its sensible load, hitting the temperature on the thermostat, while still carrying a latent load it never fully addressed, which is the mechanism behind a cool room that still feels muggy.
Dew Point
Dew point is the temperature air would have to cool down to before the moisture inside it starts condensing into liquid. Unlike relative humidity, dew point doesn't shift just because the air temperature changes, which makes it a steadier, more absolute read on how muggy the air actually is.
A higher dew point means muggier air no matter what the thermostat says, and it's a useful number for telling a genuinely humid day apart from one that just feels sticky indoors because of how a system is running. Meteorologists lean on it for exactly that reason, and it works the same way inside a house.
Short Cycling
Short cycling is when a system turns on, satisfies the thermostat quickly, and shuts back off again in a short burst, over and over, instead of running longer, steadier cycles. A system sized larger than the home needs is one cause, since more capacity than necessary hits the setpoint fast and shuts off early. A weak electrical part cutting power too soon, or airflow restricted enough to trip the system's own safety shutoff, can end a cycle just as early, which is why the cause is a diagnosis rather than a guess.
Homeowners care about short cycling because drying the air is slow work, and a system only gets to it once the coil has been cold long enough for water to keep beading off it and draining away. Cut every cycle short and the equipment spends its whole day dropping the temperature and almost none of it removing water, which is one way a house reads cool on the wall and still feels damp on your skin.
Dehumidification Mode
Dehumidification mode, sometimes labeled dry mode, is a dedicated thermostat setting built specifically to pull moisture out of the air even when the temperature itself doesn't call for much cooling.
