Refrigerant work means connecting gauges to a sealed system and reading pressures that shift with outdoor temperature, work that requires an EPA-issued handling certification most homeowners never have a reason to get. Open a panel wrong or push the wrong tool down the wrong line, and a small problem can turn into a system-wide one.

Southwest Florida's heat and humidity push these same parts harder than they'd work in a milder climate, running longer hours across more months of the year. That's part of why they fail here more often. It doesn't change who is qualified to open them up.

A yes to any of those means the job belongs to a technician. A clean no across the board is where a homeowner can reasonably take it on. A slow drain, a dead thermostat display, and a dusty filter are common examples of a clean no. A breaker that won't hold, a hissing sound near the lines, or a panel that's already been opened are common examples of a yes. When it's close, the safer move is to stop and ask instead of guessing.
