I installed a new thermostat and now the AC won't turn on. What happened?

A Thermostat Swap Touches More Wires Than It Looks Like
Installing a new thermostat looks simple from the outside: pull the old faceplate off, note which wire sits where, connect the same wires to the new base, and mount it. Behind that faceplate, though, is a small bundle of low-voltage wires, each one assigned to a specific terminal, controlling a specific function like the compressor, the fan, or the heat. Getting all of them onto the right terminal, especially when the labeling on the old thermostat has faded or the new one uses slightly different terminal names, is easy to get almost right and just as easy to get one wire off.
One wire on the wrong terminal, or one that looks connected but isn't fully seated, is often all it takes to stop the whole system from responding. The AC isn't damaged in that scenario. It's simply not getting the signal it needs, the same way a light switch wired to the wrong fixture doesn't mean either the switch or the light is broken.
It isn't only about which terminal a wire lands on, either. Older systems were sometimes wired for a simple setup with just a few wires, while a new thermostat built for multi-stage cooling or a heat pump can have more connection points than the original bundle has wires to fill. Newer Thermostats Sometimes Expect Power the Old One Never Needed

If the new thermostat runs on batteries, confirm they're seated correctly and try a fresh set, since a blank or unresponsive display can look exactly like a wiring problem when it's really just power to the thermostat itself. If the display is lit but the system still won't respond, a single breaker reset is a reasonable next step: switch the breaker fully off, then back on, once, then set the thermostat back to cool and see if the system holds.
That's also where DIY troubleshooting should stop. Once the wires are connected to the new thermostat, resist the urge to start unclipping them again to try a different combination, or to hang the old thermostat back up to test things out. Moving wires around by trial and error, or reopening a connection that's already made, is exactly how a simple mismatch turns into a bigger problem, and it isn't worth the risk of getting it wrong twice. If you happened to take a photo of the original wiring before disconnecting anything, hang onto it. It saves whoever looks at this from reconstructing the old setup from memory.
