Attic and garage placement for an air handler both work, and the real differences come down to heat, access, and what happens if something leaks. An attic runs hotter for more of the day and asks for a ladder every time someone needs to reach it, but a leak up there can go unnoticed far longer than one at ground level. A garage or closet unit is easier to reach and a leak shows up fast, though it gives up space at ground level instead. An air handler sitting up there is working inside that heat the entire time it runs, which adds to what the equipment has to overcome before it even starts cooling a single room.
A garage or an interior closet starts from a cooler baseline. A closet inside conditioned space has it easiest, sitting in air close to room temperature already. A garage runs warmer than the house itself, since it isn't conditioned space either, but it typically doesn't reach the extremes an attic does under a hot roof. Less ambient heat around the cabinet means less for the equipment to fight through before the actual cooling work even begins. Heat also isn't kind to electronics and moving parts over time, so a cabinet running in a hotter spot for years is doing that work under tougher conditions the whole way through.
What Happens to the Ductwork, Not Just the Cabinet
An attic air handler usually means long duct runs traveling through that same hot, unconditioned space before the air ever reaches a room. Even well-insulated ductwork loses some of its cooling to the heat around it on that trip, so the system has to make up for losses a closet or garage setup with shorter runs through easier space rarely deals with in the same way.
A closet placement often keeps ducts running a short distance through conditioned or semi-conditioned space, and a garage setup can go either way depending on how the house was laid out. This does not make attic ductwork a bad idea on its own. Well-sealed and properly insulated ductwork handles it fine, but it is one more reason attic systems lean harder on getting the details right than a closet unit usually has to.
Service Access: A Quick Errand or a Hot Crawl
A closet or garage air handler is a quick errand. Changing a filter or having a technician look at the system means walking over and opening a door, nothing more involved than that. That simplicity makes it more likely filters actually get changed on schedule, since there's no real barrier between deciding to do it and doing it. It also means a technician can get straight to diagnosing the actual problem during a service call instead of spending part of the visit just getting to the equipment.
An attic unit asks more of anyone who needs to reach it, usually a pull-down ladder and a hot climb before any work even starts. That's not a reason to avoid attic placement on its own: plenty of homes run one for years without issue. It does mean upkeep takes real effort instead of being incidental, and that effort matters most on the tasks that are easiest to put off.
When a Leak Happens, Location Decides How Bad It Gets
Every air handler produces condensation, and every drain line can eventually clog or back up somewhere down the line. What differs by location is what happens next. A leak in a garage lands on a concrete floor where it's hard to miss and does little real damage. A closet leak is noticed just as fast, right there in the living space, even if it means dealing with flooring or a nearby wall. Either way, someone in the house usually notices within a day, long before the moisture has much chance to spread.
An attic leak is the honest exception. Water can travel across a ceiling before it ever shows up as a stain, soaking insulation and drywall along the way, out of sight the entire time. That's not a reason to rule attic placement out. It's a reason a secondary drain pan and a working float switch matter more up there than almost anywhere else in the house.
Humidity Doesn't Skip Either Location
Southwest Florida's humidity doesn't stay out of a garage, a closet, or an attic. All three sit inside a climate where moisture in the air is a near-constant fact, not a seasonal visitor. A drain line or a coil can grow algae and biofilm in any of these spots, given enough warmth, standing moisture, and time between service visits.
Location changes how much that risk gets noticed, not whether it exists in the first place. A closet or garage problem tends to announce itself fast. An attic problem can sit quietly for longer. Either way, the climate is the same for both, which is exactly why regular attention matters regardless of which spot your equipment happens to call home. Regular attention closes that gap in a way location by itself never will.
Which Placement Actually Fits Your House
For most homes, this isn't a live decision: the ductwork and the structure already made the call. Where it genuinely opens back up is during a new install, when duct routing, access, and moisture protection are all still on the table instead of already poured into the walls.
If keeping the garage or closet open matters more to you than easy access, and you're comfortable with a secondary drain pan and steady maintenance, attic placement can serve a home well for years. If fast access and a leak you'll notice right away matter more, ground-level placement earns its keep instead. Either way, a written installation estimate is where that conversation actually happens, specific to your house rather than borrowed from whatever the last contractor decided. Bring up heat, access, moisture, and ductwork, and expect straight answers on all four before signing off on a location.
