Several small safety switches live inside your air conditioner, and each one exists to shut part or all of the system down before something else gets damaged. A Shutdown Can Be the System Protecting Itself, Not Failing
It's easy to hear that an AC shut itself off and assume something broke. Sometimes the opposite is true. A handful of small switches sit throughout the system specifically to interrupt power the moment a condition crosses a line that isn't safe to keep running through: heat, pressure, or water level, depending on the switch. When one of them trips, it did its job. Something else in the system is what actually needs the attention.
That distinction matters because the honest fix for a tripped safety switch is almost never the switch itself. It's whatever condition made the switch trip in the first place. Clearing a trip without addressing the condition behind it only sets the same trip up to happen again, which is why a tripped switch is a diagnosis rather than something to reset and forget.
The High-Limit Switch: Guarding the Backup Heat Strips from Their Own Heat
Many heat pump systems in Florida homes carry electric heat strips inside the air handler as backup heat for the occasional cold snap. Those strips generate real heat inside a metal cabinet, and if airflow through that cabinet is restricted, a dirty filter or a closed vent, that heat has nowhere to go and the cabinet's internal temperature can climb higher than it should. A high-limit switch watches for exactly that and cuts power to the heat strips before the temperature crosses into unsafe territory.

A low-pressure switch does the opposite job, cutting power if pressure drops too low, which usually points toward a refrigerant leak or a restriction somewhere in the system.
Either switch tripping is a message about a condition in the system: airflow or a dirty outdoor coil on the high side, a leak or a restriction on the low side. The switch is the messenger, not the problem. Running the system repeatedly against a low-pressure trip only forces the compressor to keep starting under a condition it's specifically protected against, which is not a habit worth building.
Not the Float Switch, Which Is Watching Something Else Entirely
If your system has shut off after water backed up in a drain pan or a condensate line ran slow, that's a different device, a float switch, built to protect against an overflow rather than heat or pressure. It works on the same basic idea, a condition crosses a line and the system shuts down on purpose, but the condition it's watching is water level, not temperature or refrigerant.
Switches like these can occasionally stick or fail on their own, though that's far less common than the actual condition they're watching for. Either way, don't just keep resetting a switch that keeps tripping. If you notice a burning smell along with a repeated trip, skip troubleshooting altogether: shut the system off and call right away.
