During a visit, that capacitor gets tested against its actual rating rather than assumed to be fine because the unit happened to be running on the way to the appointment. A capacitor that tests under its rating gets called out while the system is still running, so the decision about replacing it is yours to make on a calm day, not during a breakdown.
This step stays with the technician throughout: a capacitor holds a charge even when the unit is fully powered down, so it gets checked with meters rather than opened and eyeballed.
Reading Refrigerant Pressure at the Source
Gauges connect at the outdoor unit because that's where both the low side and the high side of the refrigerant circuit are reachable for testing. The reading gets checked against the manufacturer's spec, not a one-size number.
That direct read matters because how cold the air feels inside doesn't tell the whole story: a system can blow reasonably cool air while running on pressures that are already off from where they should be. A reading a little outside spec today isn't necessarily a problem tomorrow, but it's worth having on record so the next visit's numbers mean something compared against it.
What Happens If One of These Checks Turns Up a Problem
If the capacitor tests weak, the pressures read outside the normal range, or a wiring connection looks like it's starting to go, that gets flagged and explained in plain terms during the visit.
Any actual repair beyond the inspection itself gets quoted separately and confirmed with you before it happens, the same upfront approach as any other visit. The point of the outdoor checks is catching a problem while it's still small and telling you about it clearly, not turning every finding into an on-the-spot repair bill you didn't see coming.
A Last Look at Wiring Before the Panel Goes Back On

Vibration from the compressor and fan running for months at a stretch is enough to work a connection loose over time, even one that was tight at the last visit. A connection that's slightly loose today is a service call waiting to happen later, and a routine visual check is what catches it while it's still just loose, not yet a no-cool call.
