Why is my Florida garage so hot, and what can I do about it?
Your Florida garage gets so hot because it collects solar heat through the roof and garage door all day with little to no insulation and almost no way for that heat to escape, then holds onto it well past sunset. Ventilation, like fans or vents, exchanges some of that hot air for outside air and takes the edge off, but it can't cool the space the way actual air conditioning can. A Garage Is Built to Trap Heat, Not Shed It
Living space gets insulation, sometimes a radiant barrier, and conditioned air all working together to keep heat out. A garage usually gets none of that. It's often just a slab, block or framed walls, a bare roof deck overhead, and a large steel or aluminum door facing the driveway, sometimes sitting in direct sun for most of the day.
All of that surface area soaks up solar heat and has almost nowhere to send it. There's no conditioned air pulling heat back out of the space, and usually not much insulation slowing down how fast it gets in. By the time you open the door in the afternoon, the garage has been collecting heat since morning with no real way to let any of it go.
In an attached garage, that heat doesn't always stay put. It can work its way through the shared wall or the door into the house itself, which means a hot garage can end up pushing back against the very system that's trying to keep the rooms next to it comfortable.
Ventilation and Conditioning Solve Different Problems
It helps to think of these as two separate jobs. Ventilation moves air, swapping stale, superheated garage air for whatever air is outside through a vent, a fan, or an open door. That brings the temperature down toward the outdoor temperature, which helps, especially in a garage that's been sealed shut all day.
Conditioning is a different job entirely. It actively removes heat from the air inside the space and keeps doing that, holding the temperature at a set point regardless of what's happening outside. A fan can take a garage from unbearable to just hot. Only conditioning gets it to comfortable, and that difference matters if you actually want to spend time working, training, or hanging out in there.
For a garage that's only used to park a car and store a few boxes, ventilation alone might honestly be enough, and there's no reason to spend more than that problem calls for. It's when the space needs to function like a real room, somewhere you can comfortably spend an hour or more, that the gap between less hot and actually comfortable starts to matter.
What Insulation Can and Can't Do for a Garage
Insulating the door and walls, and sealing up gaps around them, is genuinely worth doing. It slows down how fast heat moves into the space, and it makes whatever cooling you do have work less hard to keep up. That's a real benefit, not a sales pitch.
What insulation can't do is create cooling that isn't there. A well-insulated but unconditioned garage sitting in full Florida sun will still climb well above the outdoor temperature over the course of a day, just more slowly than an uninsulated one would. Insulation buys time and improves efficiency. It doesn't replace an actual way to remove heat from the space once it's built up.
The attic space above an unfinished garage plays a part too, since a hot roof deck can radiate heat down into the garage well into the evening. Adding insulation there, along with sealing the gap that often shows daylight along the bottom of the garage door, closes off some of the easiest paths heat has to get in.

Running new ductwork out to a garage is expensive and often impractical, especially in a space that was never connected to the home's system in the first place.
