What's the difference between a return vent and a supply vent?
A supply vent pushes cooled, dehumidified air out into a room; a return vent pulls warm room air back toward the air handler so the system can cool it again. Supply vents sit in nearly every room and usually have adjustable louvers. Return vents are far fewer, often just one or two for an entire house, and rarely have any louvers to adjust at all. Mixing the two up is common, and it changes how you'd troubleshoot a room that never feels right.
Two Vents, Opposite Jobs
Central air conditioning moves in a loop, not a straight line. Cooled air leaves the air handler through the ductwork and comes out through a supply vent into a room. That same room's air, now warmer after picking up heat from people, sunlight, and appliances, has to find its way back to the air handler somehow so the cycle can start over. That return trip happens through a return vent, usually a grille in a hallway, a wall, or a ceiling, connected to its own separate duct that leads straight back to the system.
Both are openings in the ductwork, and both sit flush with a wall or ceiling, which is exactly why they get confused. But one is an exit for cooled air, and the other is an entrance for the air the system needs back. Get that backwards while troubleshooting a stuffy room, and you can spend a while looking in the wrong duct entirely.
How to Tell Them Apart Without Guessing
The clearest test doesn't need any tools. Hold your hand, or a tissue, near the vent while the system is running. A supply vent blows air out at you, usually a noticeable breeze. A return vent pulls air in toward it instead, and you'll feel a tissue drawn toward the grille rather than pushed away from it. Size is a second clue: supply vents tend to be smaller and more numerous, while a return is often the largest single grille in the house, since it has to move a much bigger volume of air through one opening.
Look at the grille itself, too. Most supply vents have small adjustable fins, or a lever, letting you angle or partly close the airflow. Return grilles almost never have that hardware, since there's nothing to aim. Many also have a visible filter sitting just behind the grille or built into it, which a supply vent never does.
Why Most Houses Have Far Fewer Returns Than Supplies
A typical Florida home might have a supply vent in every bedroom, the living room, and the kitchen, a dozen or more scattered through the house. Returns are a different story. Plenty of homes run on a single central return, often in a hallway, feeding the entire house through one opening. Some two-story homes add a second return upstairs, but even that is a small number next to a house full of supply vents.
That imbalance is normal, not a design flaw. Return ductwork is larger and more expensive to run to every room, so builders typically size one or two big returns to handle the same total airflow that a dozen small supply vents deliver. It works fine as long as air actually has a clear path back to that return from every room in the house.
What Actually Starves a Return
A closed bedroom door is the most common return killer in a single-return house. Shut the door with no other way for that room's air to leave, no louvered door, no gap underneath big enough to matter, and that room stops feeding the loop even though its supply vent is still blowing air in. Furniture, rugs, or curtains pushed up against the house's one return grille cause the same problem in miniature, right at the source instead of out in a bedroom.
A starved return shows up as weak airflow everywhere in the house, not just in one room, since the whole system is short on the air it needs to move across the coil and back out through the ducts. If closed doors and blocked grilles are ruled out and airflow is still weak system-wide, that's worth a proper look rather than a guess.
