Two Machines, One Thermostat

Your air conditioner is really two separate machines sharing one control system. Indoors, the air handler holds the blower and the evaporator coil, and it only needs a low-voltage signal from the thermostat plus its own household circuit to spin up. Outdoors, the condenser holds the compressor, the outdoor fan, and the condenser coil, and it needs that same low-voltage signal plus a full, separate power path of its own before anything out there will start. The thermostat calls both sides at once. Whether each side actually answers is a separate question.

That's why an indoor unit can run while the outdoor unit stays completely still. The blower doesn't need anything from the compressor to spin, so it will happily keep moving air through your ducts even if the outdoor half of the system never gets the message. You'll usually notice the air turning warm within a few minutes, since there's nothing outside actually removing heat from it anymore. The indoor unit running tells you the air handler has power. It does not tell you the outdoor unit is being called at all: the fan runs on its own signal, while the cooling call travels a separate low-voltage wire out to the condenser. So the chain worth walking is the cooling call and that control wiring first, then the contactor, then the capacitor. The Chain That Has to Close Outdoors

The contactor, a switch that pulls in to send full power through to the compressor and outdoor fan, has to actually close. And the capacitor has to deliver a strong enough jolt of stored power to get both motors spinning. A technician diagnosing a silent outdoor unit is really just testing that list, one part at a time, until the actual gap turns up.

It's worth knowing the difference between this and a related but separate problem. An outdoor unit that hums when it tries to start, rather than staying silent, is usually pointing at something more specific: a capacitor that's weak but not completely dead. Total silence outside, with no hum at all, more often points further back in the chain, toward the breaker or the contactor never energizing in the first place. Either way, the fix lives inside the outdoor cabinet, and it's diagnosed with test equipment, not a guess from across the yard.

The One Safe Check, and Exactly Where It Stops

There's one thing worth trying yourself here, and it stops well short of the outdoor unit itself. Find the breaker for the outdoor condenser in your electrical panel, usually labeled for the AC or the condenser separately from the air handler's breaker, switch it off, then back on. Then set the thermostat back to cool and give the system a few minutes to respond.

If the outdoor unit starts, good, though it's still worth mentioning at your next maintenance visit, since a breaker doesn't usually trip for no reason. If it trips again right away, or the outdoor unit stays silent anyway, stop there. That's your answer: the problem is electrical and inside the unit, and it isn't one a breaker reset fixes no matter how many times you try it. The outdoor disconnect box and anything behind the unit's own panel isn't a homeowner step. That part belongs to a licensed technician with a meter in hand.
