What does a lightning strike do to an AC system?
A lightning strike can hit an AC system two different ways: a direct hit dumps an enormous, instant surge of current through whatever wiring and metal it touches, while a strike elsewhere on the grid or ground nearby sends a smaller induced surge through the power lines feeding the house. Either one can damage the outdoor unit's control board, capacitor, or compressor, though a direct hit is far more likely to destroy expensive parts outright rather than just weaken them.
Two Different Events Get Called the Same 'Lightning Damage'
A direct strike on a house, the outdoor unit, or the power line feeding it is a genuinely rare event, and when it happens the amount of electrical energy involved is enormous, far beyond anything the system's wiring or components were ever built to handle. That kind of hit tends to be unmistakable: a loud, close crack of thunder at the same instant something in the house stops working, sometimes with visible scorching or a burnt smell at an outlet, panel, or the outdoor unit itself.
Far more common is an induced surge: a strike some distance away, on a neighboring property, a utility pole, or a bolt that never touches the ground near the house at all, that still pushes a spike of voltage through the power grid and into the house's wiring. It's a smaller event than a direct hit, but smaller is relative. It's still well above the routine grid noise a system deals with on an ordinary day, and it travels in through the exact same wires a direct hit would use, just with less force behind it.
Where That Energy Actually Goes Once It's Inside
The outdoor unit is usually first in the system's path, since it sits outside connected directly to the power line and, on many installations, to a low-voltage thermostat wire running back to the house as well. A surge arriving through either path can reach the control board first, the small circuit board that reads the thermostat's signal and tells the compressor and fan when to run. A board that takes a hard enough hit usually just stops responding entirely, even though nothing about the unit looks physically damaged from the outside.
A direct or severe strike doesn't always stop at the board. The compressor's internal windings and the capacitor that helps start it can both take damage from enough current, and a compressor that's been electrically damaged is a different, far more expensive repair than a board or a capacitor. Indoor equipment isn't automatically safe either. The air handler's own control board and blower motor sit on that same electrical and low-voltage thermostat circuit, so a strike doesn't have to hit the outdoor unit specifically to leave damage indoors too.
What a Strike Actually Looks Like From Inside the House
The most common sign is simple: the system was running before the storm and does nothing afterward, thermostat included, or the thermostat display works but nothing outside responds when it calls for cooling. A breaker that trips and won't hold after being reset once is another sign worth taking seriously rather than resetting it again and again.
If you smell burning or see any scorching at the outdoor unit, the panel, or an outlet, shut the system off and call right away. That's the one situation here that calls for acting immediately rather than waiting to schedule a look. Everything else, a dead system or a tripped breaker with no burning smell, can safely wait for a scheduled visit.
