AC Installation Day: A Complete Walk-Through

The short version

Installation day for a new AC system follows a predictable order: arrival and home protection, removing the old equipment, setting the new indoor and outdoor units, joining and sealing the line set, pulling a vacuum, charging the system with refrigerant, and testing everything before the crew leaves. None of those steps happens in isolation. Skipping or rushing any one of them is usually where a new system's problems trace back to later. Knowing the order ahead of time turns a stressful, unfamiliar day into something a lot more predictable.

Before the Truck Ever Shows Up

By the time installation day arrives, the decisions are already made: the equipment, the load calculation behind the sizing, and the written estimate are settled from the visit before. What's left for the homeowner is mostly logistics. Clear a path to the indoor air handler, whether that's a closet, attic, or garage, and make sure the area around the outdoor condenser is reachable. Move vehicles out of the driveway if the crew needs room for the truck and equipment, and keep pets in a separate room for the day; a crew moving in and out of the house all day and a nervous animal don't mix well. It also helps to have the electrical panel accessible and clearly labeled if you already know which breaker feeds the outdoor unit, since the crew will need to shut it off before touching anything.

It's also worth thinking about the rest of the household's schedule. Power to the air handler and outdoor unit gets shut off for a stretch of the day, which usually isn't a problem, but it's not the day to plan around video calls in a home office that shares a circuit with the work area. A rough sense of how long the job will take is worth asking for ahead of time, even though the exact hours depend on what the crew finds once they start.

Arrival and Protecting the House First

A professional crew starts by protecting the house, not by grabbing tools. Drop cloths or floor runners go down along the path from the door to wherever the indoor equipment lives, since a system replacement means carrying an old unit out and a new one in, sometimes through a hallway or a garage that wasn't built with that in mind. Furniture near the work area gets moved or covered before anything else happens.

Before any equipment gets touched, a good crew walks the job with the homeowner one more time: confirming the equipment that was quoted, where the new outdoor unit will sit, and anything unusual about the house that wasn't obvious at the estimate visit. That short walk-through is worth paying attention to. It's the last easy moment to ask a question before things get disconnected.

Crews typically stage the new equipment, line set, and tools in the driveway or garage first, which keeps the work area organized instead of scattered through the house room by room. It's a small thing, but it's usually a fair early sign of how the rest of the day will go.

Taking Out the Old System

Power to the system gets shut off at the breaker before anyone touches a wire, standard practice on any electrical equipment, not just an aging AC. With power confirmed off, the crew disconnects the indoor air handler and the electrical connections running to the outdoor condenser.

Before the old line set gets cut, the refrigerant inside it has to go somewhere. Standard practice is recovering it into a tank rather than releasing it, both because it's the responsible way to handle it and because refrigerant handling rules require it. Once that's done, the old indoor and outdoor units come out, along with the old line set if it isn't being reused, and get carried out to the truck.

Setting the New Indoor and Outdoor Units

The new indoor air handler goes into roughly the same footprint as the old one in most replacements, closet, attic, or garage, though a crew will flag it if the space needs any adjustment for the new equipment's size or airflow connections. Getting it level and properly supported matters more than it sounds like it should; a unit that isn't sitting right can affect drainage and how smoothly it runs for years afterward.

Outside, the new condenser typically sits on the same pad as the old one, though a cracked or sunken pad sometimes needs to be replaced or releveled first. Southwest Florida's rainy season and soft ground make a solid, level pad worth getting right the first time, since a unit settling unevenly over the years can strain the refrigerant lines connected to it. Standard practice also leaves a few inches of clearance on every side of the new condenser so it can draw air freely; tight against a fence or a wall is a common mistake worth avoiding.

Brazing the Line Set and Pulling a Vacuum

The copper line set carries refrigerant between the indoor and outdoor units, and the connections between sections get joined by brazing, a heat-based method that melts filler metal into the joint to seal it completely. It's a different process from soldering a household pipe; brazing runs hotter and is what makes the joint tight enough to hold refrigerant under pressure for the next decade without leaking. Many crews also flow a small stream of nitrogen through the line set while brazing, which keeps oxygen out of the copper during the heat and stops scale from forming inside the line, debris that could otherwise travel into the compressor later.

Once the line set is sealed, the whole system gets pulled down to a vacuum before any refrigerant goes in. That step removes air and moisture from inside the lines and coils, both of which cause real problems if they're left in: moisture can damage a compressor over time, and trapped air throws off the pressures the system depends on to work correctly. Skipping or rushing the vacuum is one of the more common ways a new install runs into trouble down the road, even though nothing looks wrong on the day itself.

Charging the System and Bringing It to Life

With the vacuum confirmed and the lines sealed, refrigerant goes into the system to the amount the manufacturer specifies for that exact equipment and line length, not a generic fill. Getting the charge right, not too little and not too much, is part of what makes the difference between a system that hits its rated efficiency and one that technically runs but never quite performs the way the sticker on the box suggested it would. Two numbers guide that check: how far the refrigerant has cooled below its boiling point on one side of the system, and how far it's warmed past its boiling point on the other. Technicians call them subcooling and superheat, and together they tell a trained eye whether the charge is exactly right.

That's also the moment the system runs for the first time as a complete unit. The crew brings it to life gradually, checking pressures and temperatures against the manufacturer's numbers as it settles in, rather than just flipping it on and walking away. A new system's first few minutes of running tell a trained technician a lot about whether everything upstream, the brazing, the vacuum, the charge, was done right.

Commissioning, the Walkthrough, and Your First Few Days With It

Commissioning is the last technical step: confirming airflow at the vents, checking that the condensate drain is actually draining, and making sure the thermostat is communicating with the new equipment the way it's supposed to. This is also where the full system test happens before the crew leaves, the same test that's supposed to happen on every new installation, not an optional extra.

Before anyone leaves, a good crew walks the homeowner through the new equipment: where the filter lives, how the thermostat's features work if it's a different model, and what a normal first run sounds and feels like. A brand new system can run a little differently than the old one, often quieter, sometimes with a different airflow feel at the vents, and it helps to hear that from the crew instead of wondering about it alone that evening. A good crew also points out the outdoor disconnect box and confirms the breaker panel is labeled for the new equipment, a small detail that matters later if a breaker ever needs to be checked.

The first few days are worth paying loose attention to: does every room feel like it's getting air, does the thermostat schedule make sense, is there anything that seems off compared to what was walked through.
