What Actually Drives Your Cooling Bill

The short version

A cooling bill is mostly a runtime bill: the more hours the compressor actually runs, the more it costs to keep a house comfortable. What decides those hours stacks up from several directions at once, how much heat and humidity the house has to fight before the system even starts, how well the equipment converts electricity into cooling, and how the thermostat gets used day to day. The Bill Is Really a Runtime Bill

Underneath the number on a power bill is a much simpler question: how many hours did the compressor run this month? A system running four hours a day and one running fourteen hours a day are paying for very different amounts of work, even sitting in identical houses with identical thermostats. Almost everything that follows on this page comes down to explaining why that second number gets so much bigger.

Runtime is not the whole story on its own, since two systems running the same number of hours still are not doing the same amount of work if one is more efficient than the other. But runtime is the piece that moves the most, month to month, in a house where the equipment hasn't changed, so it's the right place to start.

How Much the House Makes the System Fight For It

Before a single degree of cooling happens, the house itself is already deciding how hard the system has to work. Attic insulation, how much sun hits the windows, and how well doors and old window frames seal all shape how much heat and humidity sneak in before the thermostat ever calls for cooling. Two houses of the same size, running the same equipment, can post very different runtime because of what's happening at the walls and roofline rather than anything about the air conditioner itself.

How Well the Equipment Turns Power Into Cooling

The same house, the same habits, and the same weather can still post different runtime depending on the condition of the equipment itself. A dirty coil or a system that has quietly lost some of its performance over the years has to run longer to hit the same setpoint as a system that's been kept in shape. This is the lever that tends to show up with no obvious symptom at all: no strange noise, no warm air, just runtime creeping upward a little at a time.

What a maintenance visit does control is whether a system is running the way it was designed to, whatever tier it started at.

How the Thermostat Actually Gets Used

Runtime also depends on how the system gets driven day to day, not just where the setpoint sits. A steady setting and a setting that gets pushed up and down through the day put different demands on the system.

Why the Three Drivers Never Stack the Same Way Twice

Envelope, equipment condition, and thermostat habits don't act in isolation, they stack on top of each other in whatever combination a specific house happens to have. A well-maintained system in a leaky house can still run long hours, and a tight house with neglected equipment can post surprising runtime too. Because those three interact instead of adding up cleanly, a runtime number that fits one house says close to nothing about the house next door.
