It's also worth glancing at the filter slot itself once, with the system off and the old filter out. Some return grilles and filter racks are built so the filter can only physically fit one way, but plenty of others will accept it facing either direction without any resistance, which is exactly how a backward filter can sit there unnoticed for months without anyone realizing.
