How a TXV Knows When to Open or Close

The valve's pin is constantly nudging open or closed in small amounts to hold that balance as the outdoor temperature, the thermostat's demand, and the house's load all shift throughout the day.

What a Failing TXV Actually Looks Like

A TXV stuck too far open floods the coil with more refrigerant than it can boil off, and that excess can travel further down the line than it should, sometimes showing up as ice on the suction line or even frost creeping onto the coil itself despite the system otherwise trying to run normally. A TXV stuck too far closed starves the coil instead: cooling starts out fine, then the air coming out the vents gradually turns warm as the coil can't get enough refrigerant to keep working.

A valve that's failing rather than fully stuck often shows up as a hissing or a faint popping sound near the indoor coil, the sound of refrigerant fighting its way through a restriction that's no longer opening and closing the way it should. None of these symptoms point to a bad TXV on their own. A low refrigerant charge, a dirty coil, or an airflow problem can all produce a similar warm-air or icing complaint, which is exactly why guessing at the part instead of testing it usually leads to the wrong fix.
