What does a 'ton' of air conditioning mean?
A 'ton' of air conditioning is a unit of cooling power, not a measure of weight or size. One ton equals 12,000 BTUs of heat removed per hour, a figure borrowed from the days before mechanical cooling, when a literal ton of ice delivered to a building would melt over 24 hours while absorbing about that much heat. A home's system might be rated at 2, 3, 4, or 5 tons, depending on how much heat it actually needs removed.
Borrowed From the Days Ice Came by the Wagonload
Before mechanical air conditioning existed, buildings that wanted cooling relied on actual ice, delivered in blocks. Melting ice absorbs a specific, measurable amount of heat as it turns from solid to liquid. Someone worked out that melting one ton, 2,000 pounds, of ice over 24 hours absorbs close to 12,000 British thermal units, or BTUs, of heat every hour. When mechanical cooling came along and needed a way to rate how much heat a machine could remove, engineers borrowed that same number instead of inventing a new one.

Residential systems around Southwest Florida commonly land somewhere between 2 and 5 tons, with real variation from home to home. A 2-ton system removes 24,000 BTUs of heat per hour. A 5-ton system removes 60,000. The bigger the number, the more heat the system is built to carry away in the same hour, which roughly, not precisely, tracks with how much square footage, window area, ceiling height, and sun exposure a home is asking it to handle.
That word 'roughly' matters. Square footage alone is a starting point, not the whole calculation. Two homes of identical size can still need different tonnage once you factor in how well-sealed each one is, how much afternoon sun the roof takes on, and how many people and appliances are adding their own heat inside. A 2-ton condo and a 5-ton two-story house aren't different by accident. One is simply fighting a lot more heat gain than the other. Tonnage is the answer to a math problem about one specific house, not a number pulled from a lookup table.
Why a Bigger Number on the Spec Sheet Isn't the Safer Bet
It's natural to assume more tons means more comfort, the same way a bigger engine sounds like the better car. Air conditioning capacity doesn't really work that way. A system sized well above what a home actually needs satisfies the thermostat before it's run long enough to pull much moisture out of the air, so the house can read cool and still feel damp. The right tonnage is the number that fits the house, not the largest one available.
Think of it less like horsepower and more like shoe size. A shoe two sizes too big doesn't make a foot more comfortable, it just fits worse in a different direction. Tonnage works the same way. Matched is the goal, not maximized, and the number on the nameplate is only useful when it was chosen to fit one specific house.
Where the Right Number Actually Comes From
Getting that number right isn't a homeowner task, and it isn't something to guess from the old equipment either. It's the output of a proper sizing evaluation done at install time, matched to that one house instead of assumed from a rule of thumb.
