What is a cooling cycle, start to finish?
A cooling cycle is the full chain of events between a thermostat calling for cooling and the system shutting back down: a low-voltage signal closes a switch outside, the compressor and outdoor fan start moving refrigerant and rejecting heat, the indoor blower pulls air across a cold coil and pushes it through the ducts, and once the house reaches the set temperature, the outdoor equipment shuts off first with the indoor fan trailing it briefly before everything goes quiet again.
It Starts With a Low-Voltage Signal, Not the Compressor
The very first event in a cooling cycle isn't anything mechanical at all. It's the thermostat sensing the room has drifted above the setpoint and sending a small, low-voltage signal down a few thin wires to the outdoor unit and the air handler. That signal is the trigger for everything that follows, and it's carrying almost no power itself, just an instruction: start cooling now.
Outside, a Switch Closes and Two Things Start Moving
That signal reaches a component called a contactor sitting in the outdoor unit's electrical compartment, and the contactor's job is to close a switch that lets full household power flow to the compressor and the outdoor fan motor. Both start essentially together. The compressor begins pressurizing refrigerant and pushing it through the outdoor coil, and the fan pulls outside air across that same coil so the heat the refrigerant is carrying has somewhere to go.
This is the half of the system doing the actual work of rejecting heat out of the house and into the outside air. It's also the noisiest, most visible part of a cycle starting, which is why people tend to picture the outdoor unit kicking on as the whole event, even though it's really just one half of what's happening at that moment.
Inside, the Blower and the Cold Coil Do the Other Half
At roughly the same time, the indoor blower motor starts pulling air from inside the house across the evaporator coil, the indoor half of the same refrigerant loop. Refrigerant arriving at that coil is cold and under low pressure, and as room air passes over the coil's fins, the refrigerant absorbs heat out of that air and changes from liquid to gas in the process. The now-cooled air gets pushed on through the ductwork and out the registers into the rooms calling for it.
Both halves, outside rejecting heat and inside absorbing it, are really one continuous loop rather than two separate events. Nothing happens at the indoor coil without the outdoor side running at the same time to keep refrigerant moving between them.
How the Cycle Winds Down
Once the thermostat reads that the room has reached the setpoint, it sends the opposite signal: stop. The contactor outside opens, cutting power to the compressor and outdoor fan, and both stop essentially at once. The indoor blower runs a little past that before it stops too, which is its own small piece of the sequence. Then everything sits quiet until the next call for cooling starts the whole sequence again.
That's the full shape of one cycle, signal, outdoor start, indoor start, shutdown. If a system you're used to seems to be skipping steps in that sequence, starting without the outdoor unit engaging, or stopping in a way that doesn't match this pattern, that's worth a look from a technician rather than a guess. An AC repair visit can watch the actual sequence run and tell you plainly which part of it isn't doing its job.
Why the Order of Events Matters More Than It Seems
Each step in that sequence depends on the one before it happening correctly, which is part of why a technician diagnosing a system pays close attention to where in the chain things actually stop working rather than just noting that the house isn't cooling. A contactor that never closes means nothing outside ever starts, which looks completely different from an outdoor unit that starts fine but an indoor blower that never follows along. Both end with a house that isn't getting cool air, but they point to entirely different parts of the sequence and entirely different repairs.
