What actually gets checked in an AC tune-up?
A real AC tune-up steps through the system's major categories one at a time: the coils get inspected and the outdoor condenser gets cleaned, capacitors and blower amperage get tested under load, the thermostat gets checked for accurate operation, and refrigerant pressures, the drain line, and the ductwork and wiring all get inspected. That's what separates an actual tune-up from someone eyeballing the outdoor unit for a minute and calling it done.
A Tune-Up Is a System Walkthrough, Not a Glance
Anyone can pop the panel off the outdoor unit, glance inside for a minute, and call it a tune-up. A real one works through the system in order: the cooling components, the electrical parts, the refrigerant circuit, water handling, and the controls, checking each on its own terms instead of eyeballing the unit as a whole and moving on.
That's part of why ECS calls its version a 34-point inspection rather than just a check-up. It isn't one look. It's a series of specific tests and cleanings, grouped below into the categories they actually fall into, on both the air handler inside and the condenser outside. Some of those points are quick visual checks, and others involve gauges and meters, but every one of them gets checked off on its own, not just assumed because the rest of the system seems fine.
The Coils Get Checked, the Condenser Gets Cleaned
The indoor coil is what actually absorbs heat from your home's air, and it collects dust over the course of a season the same way anything else with constant airflow running across it does. A layer of dust acts like a blanket, insulating the coil and making it worse at its one job, so the inspection checks it for that buildup and flags it before it costs you cooling. It's easy to miss on your own, since a coil can look fine from a few feet away even when it's coated enough to matter, which is exactly why it's a hands-on step during the inspection rather than a glance through an access panel.
Condenser cleaning covers the outdoor half of that same exchange. Grass clippings, cottonwood, dust, and general yard debris settle into the fins over a season and block the airflow the system needs to release the heat it just pulled out of your house. Clearing that buildup lets the whole system reject heat the way it was originally designed to.
Capacitors and Blower Amperage Get Tested Under Load
Capacitors help the system's motors start and keep running, and they tend to weaken gradually rather than fail with any real warning. Testing one during an inspection can catch it on its way out before it strands you with a system that hums but won't start. This is technician-only work: capacitors hold a charge, and they're not something to open up or test yourself.
Blower amperage applies that same idea to the motor moving air through your ductwork. Measuring how much current it draws under load shows whether it's working within a normal range or straining, which is often an early sign of a problem elsewhere in the system putting extra load on that motor.
Refrigerant Pressures, the Drain Line, and the Controls
Refrigerant pressures get measured against the specific range that system's manufacturer sets for it, since too much or too little refrigerant both hurt comfort and put extra strain on the compressor over time. That's measured with gauges connected directly to the system, not judged by how cold the air feels. A system can run slightly off for months without an obvious symptom indoors, which is exactly why this gets checked as a matter of routine and not only after something's already gone wrong.
The drain line gets checked and cleared, since a clogged condensate line is one of the more common reasons a system shuts itself off or leaks water during a Florida summer. The thermostat gets tested for accurate operation, and the ductwork and wiring get a visual check for wear or loose connections, because a perfectly tuned system still underperforms if the air, or the power, can't reliably get where it needs to go.
How Often This Happens
This full inspection is what ECS runs twice a year, once before the season and once after, on both the air handler and the condenser, as part of the $99-per-visit Annual Comfort Plan. None of these checks are dramatic on their own, which is part of why they're easy to put off. It's skipping the same handful of them, year after year, that tends to catch up with a system all at once.
