What is an AC contactor, and what happens when it sticks?
When an AC contactor sticks, it fails in one of two opposite directions. Stuck open, the outdoor unit does nothing when the thermostat calls for cooling. The compressor and outdoor fan need something entirely different: a full 240-volt circuit with real current behind it. The contactor is the part that bridges those two worlds. When the thermostat calls for cooling, it sends its small signal to an electromagnet inside the contactor, which pulls a set of metal contacts together and completes the larger circuit, and that is the moment the outdoor unit actually starts.
It is a simple idea, a switch that closes when told to and opens again when the call for cooling ends, but it is doing that job dozens of times a day for years, inside a metal box that spends its summer sitting in Florida heat. That combination of heavy daily use and constant heat is exactly why contactors wear out on a schedule most homeowners never think about until the day it fails.
Stuck Open: The Signal Goes Out and Nothing Answers
A contactor stuck open cannot complete that larger circuit no matter how many times the thermostat asks it to. From inside the house, that often looks like a system that seems otherwise normal, the thermostat lights up, the indoor blower may even run, but the outdoor unit stays completely silent. No fan spinning, no compressor sound.
This is easy to mistake for a bigger problem than it is, since a silent outdoor unit can also mean a tripped breaker or a dead capacitor. Why Contactors and Capacitors Tend to Fail Around the Same Time
Every time a contactor's metal contacts touch, a tiny electrical arc jumps across the gap just before they close, and that arc pits and burns the contact surface a little more with every cycle. Enough cycles, and the surface gets rough or worn enough that it stops making a clean connection, which is how a contactor ends up stuck in either direction.
A weak capacitor makes that wear happen faster. The capacitor's job is giving the compressor motor a strong jolt to start smoothly, and when it weakens, the motor draws more current and struggles longer to get going, current that still has to pass through the same worn contactor. The two parts sit in the same electrical compartment, exposed to the same heat and the same number of cycles for as long as the system has been running, so it is common for one to need attention not long after the other.
