Condensation and a Leak Are Not the Same Emergency

Two very different things get called 'water in the duct,' and mixing them up leads to the wrong fix. Condensation is moisture forming directly on a cold surface because of the air around it, not water coming from anywhere else. It is a byproduct of temperature difference, the same idea as a cold drink sweating on a humid porch. A real leak is water arriving from an outside source: rain finding a gap in the roof, a plumbing line running near the ductwork, or the AC's own drain path backing up and finding a new route. One is a normal side effect of cooling humid air. The other means something is actually broken or intruding.

Telling them apart usually comes down to timing more than anything you can see up close. Condensation builds during long, hot, humid stretches when the system has been running hard, and it tends to ease off or disappear on a mild day, or any day the AC has barely run at all. A real leak does not follow that pattern. Water that shows up after a hard rain, or that keeps appearing even when the system has been off for hours, is pointing at something other than ordinary condensation.

When the Vent Itself Is the Wet Spot

A duct sweating quietly in the attic is one thing. Water actually dripping out of a supply vent, or gathering right at the register itself, is a more noticeable version of the same idea. The metal or duct-board box connecting the last stretch of duct to the ceiling opening, sometimes called the boot, is often the least insulated point in the whole run, since it has to fit through framing and drywall rather than sit wrapped in open attic space. That makes it an easy spot for cold air inside to meet warm, humid air outside the duct directly, and moisture shows up right where you would actually notice it, not tucked away in the attic.

This shows up in the same hot, humid stretches as any other attic duct sweat, and for the same underlying reason: not enough insulation standing between cold supply air and warm, wet air outside the duct. The difference is only where you happen to see it first. A damp ring around a ceiling register in July is worth treating the same way as a stain out in the attic: a real but usually fixable insulation gap, not evidence the AC itself is failing.

The Honest Answer Is Sometimes 'Not the AC'

Not every wet duct or stained ceiling traces back to the air conditioner, and it is worth saying that plainly rather than assuming otherwise. A roof leak can travel a surprising distance along a rafter or a duct run before it ever shows up on a ceiling, landing nowhere near where the water actually entered the house. A plumbing line running through the same attic or chase can leak onto ductwork below it and get blamed on the AC simply because that is what is closest to the stain. Sometimes the honest answer from an AC technician is that the water is not coming from the system at all, and that is worth knowing just as much as an actual fix would be.

What is fair game for an AC visit is tracing anything tied to the system itself: the duct insulation, the boot connections, and the condensate path that carries water away from the coil. A technician who opens things up and finds a roof or plumbing issue instead should tell you that directly, rather than guessing at a fix for a problem that was never really an AC problem to begin with.

Reading the Stain Before Anyone Touches It

A ceiling stain does not announce its own age. A patch that has clearly been there for months and is not changing is a different situation than water that is actively spreading or dripping right now. Active, growing water is worth acting on quickly rather than watching it for a while longer. If a burning smell ever shows up anywhere near it, shut the system off and call right away, since that combination points to an electrical issue rather than a simple moisture problem.

Outside of that kind of urgency, tracing a stain properly means getting into the attic and following the duct run and the condensate path together, not guessing from underneath a ceiling.
