Air has to get back into the system efficiently before it can be pushed back out to every room.
A Frozen Coil Turns Weak Airflow Into Almost No Airflow
Restricted airflow across the indoor coil, from a dirty filter, a blocked return, or both, does more than slow the system down. Less air moving across that coil means the air spends longer in contact with it and comes off colder than it should, which can push the coil cold enough for condensation on it to freeze instead of drip away. Once ice builds up, it blocks even more airflow than the original restriction did, and weak airflow can turn into barely any airflow within a day or two.
Frost or ice on the indoor coil or the copper line running to the outdoor unit is the tell. If you see it, switch your thermostat to off (not just up) to protect the system if it's frozen or struggling, and give it time to thaw fully before running it again. Running a frozen system harder doesn't clear the ice. It just adds strain to a system that's already fighting itself.
When the Filter and Return Check Out and Airflow Is Still Weak
If the filter's clean, the return is clear, and there's no ice anywhere on the coil or line set, the cause has moved past what a homeowner can check from the outside. A weakening blower motor, a duct connection that's come loose near the air handler, or a system that was never sized with enough airflow for the house it's cooling can all produce the same whole-house symptom, and telling them apart takes a technician with the right tools, not another guess.
