Why is my AC loud inside the house but quiet outside?
Most central AC systems split the work between two boxes: a condenser outside and an air handler indoors, often tucked in a closet, garage, or attic. When the outdoor unit sounds normal but the noise inside is obvious, the source is almost always the indoor blower, the ductwork it feeds, or the sheer volume of air moving through both, not anything happening outside.
Two Boxes Doing Two Very Different Jobs
A central air system isn't one machine, it's two, working as a pair. The outdoor unit houses the compressor and the outdoor fan, the parts that do the heavy work of moving heat out of the house. The indoor air handler houses the blower and the evaporator coil, and it's usually sitting somewhere close to the living space itself, a hallway closet, a garage, or an attic right above a bedroom.
That physical arrangement is the whole reason indoor noise and outdoor noise point to different problems. A compressor or outdoor fan working hard tends to announce itself outside first. A quiet outdoor unit paired with obvious noise indoors is a strong hint that whatever's making the sound lives in the air handler or the ducts running from it, not in the box sitting on the pad outside.
The Blower Is the Most Common Source of Indoor Noise
The blower is the fan that actually pushes air through the ducts and out every vent in the house, and it runs almost every time the system does. A motor that's louder than usual, a steady whir turning into more of a whine, often means the motor itself is working harder than it used to. A rhythmic thump that speeds up and slows down with the fan is a different signal, more often a blower wheel that's picked up debris or shifted slightly out of balance.
Variable-speed systems add a wrinkle worth knowing: they're designed to ramp the blower up gradually rather than snapping straight to full speed, so a rising whoosh over the first several seconds of a cycle is normal for those systems. A sudden new noise, or one that keeps getting louder cycle after cycle, is not the same thing as that normal ramp-up and is worth paying attention to.
Ductwork Ticks, Pops, and Bangs on Its Own Schedule
Metal ductwork contracts slightly as cold supply air moves through it, then expands again as it warms back toward room temperature once the system shuts off. That small movement can produce a light ticking or popping, most noticeable right at startup or right after a cycle ends. That kind of noise is common and usually nothing to chase down.
A louder bang or a thud at startup is a different category, more often a sign that a duct panel has come loose, or that a section of flexible duct is rubbing against a framing member or the strap holding it in place every time air pressure shifts through the system. It's the kind of noise that tends to repeat in the same spot on every cycle rather than showing up once and going away.
Sometimes It's Just Air Moving Fast, Not a Broken Part
A whole-house whoosh when the blower kicks up to a higher stage is often just air moving at volume, especially on a variable-speed system working to catch up to a big temperature swing. If that general rushing sound has been part of the system since it was installed, it's likely just how that system sounds under load. A noise that's new, or that's gotten noticeably louder over recent weeks, points more toward a dirty filter choking airflow or ductwork that's undersized for the system than toward anything failing outright.
If you smell anything burning, shut the system off and call right away. A noise that is simply new, or louder than it was a few weeks ago, is worth getting looked at rather than lived with, but it is not a reason to shut the house down tonight. Otherwise, an AC repair visit can pin down whether it's the blower, the ductwork, or the airflow itself instead of guessing from the sound alone.
