How do I cool a Florida room or sunroom?
A Florida room or sunroom can usually be cooled well, but it takes more than just running the main system harder. These rooms are typically enclosed additions with a lot of glass and a roof exposed to direct sun, so they gain heat faster than the rest of the house. A ductless mini-split sized for that room's heat gain usually does better than asking the central system to condition an addition it was never sized for.
Why a Room Full of Glass Fights Back Harder
A Florida room or sunroom earns its name honestly: it's usually the room in the house with the most glass and the least buffer between the living space and direct sun. Windows or sliding glass on two or three sides let heat radiate straight in for most of the day, and a roof over an addition like this often has less insulation between the shingles and the ceiling than the roof over the original house.
That combination means the room is absorbing heat on more fronts than a typical interior room ever has to deal with. An interior bedroom loses heat mostly through one exterior wall and maybe a window or two. A Florida room can be picking up heat through three walls of glass and a roof at the same time, especially in the afternoon.
Older single-pane sliders make this worse still, letting heat transfer through the glass far more readily than the double-pane windows common in newer construction. Even with more efficient glass, though, a room with three exposed sides is going to run hotter than an interior room with one, simply because of how much surface area is facing direct sun.
Why Stretching the Main System Rarely Keeps Up
Florida rooms are almost always additions, built onto a house after the original central system and ductwork were already sized and installed. Extending that ductwork to reach a new room means a longer run of duct, more places for cooled air to lose its edge before it arrives, and more load on a system that was never measured against this room in the first place.

Push a system past what it was built to handle and the whole house cools less evenly, not just the new room.
Where a Dedicated Mini-Split Changes the Math
A ductless mini-split sidesteps the ductwork problem entirely. The line set runs through the wall to a head mounted inside the room, and that room gets its own setpoint and its own capacity, chosen for the heat this particular glass box takes on. Nothing has to travel through a duct run built for a different part of the house.
That's also why it tends to be the more honest answer for a room like this: instead of asking one central system to somehow cool a glass box it was never designed around, a ductless mini-split gives the room its own equipment matched to its own load.
It also means the rest of the house isn't affected by however hard that one room has to run. On a west-facing Florida room baking through a summer afternoon, the mini-split can work overtime cooling just that space while the central system keeps running its normal cycle for the rest of the home, instead of one thermostat trying to average out two very different heat loads.
Setting Expectations Even With the Right Equipment
Even a mini-split sized correctly for a Florida room is still fighting more heat gain per square foot than a room with less glass in it. Shades, solar film on the windows, or an overhang that blocks direct afternoon sun all reduce how hard that equipment has to work, and pairing shade with right-sized equipment gets a far more comfortable room than either one alone.
A Florida room facing west with unshaded glass through the afternoon will likely run a little warmer during peak sun than the rest of the house, even with good equipment, and that's simply the room's exposure, not a sign anything is wrong. Matching expectations to how the room is actually built, then sizing equipment to match, gets the best result.
